Principal's Message

As we move into the second half of the term, there is plenty happening across the school and much for our students to focus on.

I want to draw particular attention to our 2027-2028 Strategic Plan survey, included in this edition. The Board of Trustees is developing the school's direction and priorities for the next two years, and we would value your input. The survey takes only three to four minutes to complete, and your feedback will help shape the future of Lincoln High School. I encourage all whānau to take a moment to share their views.

This is also a significant time in the assessment calendar. The CAA exam window and derived grade examinations are approaching, and the consistent effort our students have put in throughout the year is what will now pay off in their results. I encourage all students to keep working steadily and to make the most of the support available to them as these assessments draw near. Our Year 9 to 11 Whānau/Kaiako interviews on 10 September are another valuable opportunity to discuss progress and next steps, and I encourage families to book in for these.

Course selection for 2027 also continues, with the portal closing on Friday 4 September. It was great to see such a strong turnout at our Course Selection Afternoon and Careers Expo.

Over the last few weeks, it has been a pleasure to see our students achieving and taking part in so much, from success in the arts, music, academic competitions, and competitive house events. Our sports teams have been working hard to prepare to compete across the South Island during Tournament Week and I look forward to seeing many of our teams in action next week.

2027 Course Selection - Important Information

The course selection portal opened this week and students and whanau will have received information on how to do this.  If students need some guidance in making their selections they should make a time to discuss this with their year level tutor.  A reminder that the portal closes Friday 4th September at 12.00pm.

Making selections early does not mean that there is a higher chance of getting in to preferred options, these are all looked at equally after the portal closes, however if selections are late (after the close off) then this may mean that students will miss out on their preferred selections.

There was a great turnout at our Course Selection Afternoon and Careers Expo so hopefully this helped with choices being made for 2027 and beyond.

Help Shape our 2027-2028 Strategic Plan

Yr 9-11 Whānau/Kaiako Interviews

This is a valuable opportunity for you to meet and talk to your student’s course teachers to receive further feedback for the year to date and feedforward for the remainder of the school year. We recommend that students come to these interviews as well.

We also have times available to meet with our Careers Advisor, Leesa Lawgate who will be based in her office in the careers hub.  These are only 5 minute appointments but you will be able to book more in-depth discussions with Leesa following this if you wish.

Interviews for our Year 9-11 students will be held on the 10th September and bookings will open in the next couple of days so keep an eye out on Schoolbridge..

Students in the Spotlight - Back to Base Challenge Raising Funds for the Westpac Helicopter

This year Logan and I decided to take part in the back to base challenge raising money for the Westpac helicopter. We saw it as an opportunity to get involved and challenge ourselves. The challenge was to ride our bikes raising money through beinging sponsored.

We started our ride in Little River and made our way through Lincoln and Prebbleton before heading towards the Christchurch Hospital. From there, we continued to the helicopter base located next to Christchurch Airport. Our ride was just over 70km making it a nice challenge for us both.

The weather didn't play its part, and we ended up riding through rain and wind for a large part of the journey. Despite the conditions, we kept going and manged to complete the ride. In the end we raised over $400 and we are super grateful for everyone who supported us along the way!

Congratulations to our talented young scientists who achieved outstanding results in the Canterbury region of the New Zealand Physics and Mathematics Competition (NZPMC).

This prestigious competition challenges students to apply advanced problem-solving skills and scientific thinking in a demanding academic environment. Lincoln High School was proudly represented by three students who placed among the top performers in Canterbury. In the Junior Division, Yue Li (Year 10) achieved an impressive equal 5th place, while Sansithu Deepagoda (Year 11) was placed 10th.

In the Senior Division, Ravi Bhatia (Year 12) achieved an outstanding 4th place.

These excellent results reflect the curiosity, dedication, and perseverance that our students bring to the study of science and mathematics.

We congratulate Yue, Sansithu, and Ravi on their exceptional achievements and thank the teachers and families who have supported them along the way. Well done on representing Lincoln High School with distinction.

Making Music – Blatant Composure

Lincoln High School students have shown amazing musical talent over the years. From ensembles, choirs and solo performances to jazz and rock bands.

Smokefree Rockquest is a long-established event that aims to motivate young musicians to strive for success and realise opportunities that exist in the industry. It involves regional competitions and then a national final. In 1993, Lincoln band, Blatant Composure, rocked their way to success. Comprising of five members: Dean Cornish (Guitars/ Vocals), Matt Sharr (Bass Guitar), David Mather (Guitars/Lead Vocal), Paul Ruske – (Keyboards/Vocals), and Nicola Ridder (Drums), they had performed as a four piece the year before under the name, Uncertain Termz. Due to other commitments, they lost two original band members but managed to pull in Nicola as their new drummer.

Their Rockquest set included three songs; “Her Disguise”, “Time Waits For No-One” and  “What Might Have Been.” They received a commendation for “Best Original Song” and we’re placed 2nd overall in the regional showcase, meaning they qualified for the National Final in Wellington.

Last to perform on the night, the audience was described as “lethargic” by that stage of the evening. Despite this, Blatant Composure rocked it out and again picked up a commendation for Best Original Song when the awards were handed out. According to lead vocalist, David Mather, “We were not disappointed at not getting a place, as this award meant we had written the best songs of any high school band in New Zealand.”

Lincoln students have continued to perform at Rockquest ever since, a hope Blatant Composure had when they finished their time here.

Fun Facts:

  • Rockquest has been running for 38 years
  • All songs must be original and composed by the band members to qualify

Winter Sports Captains Updates

FOOTBALL 1ST XI Girls 2026 report

The Girls' 1st XI Football team has had a positive and rewarding start to the season, continuing to grow both on and off the field. One of our highlights this term has been winning our first game of the season 4-0 against Rolleston College, which showcased the team's determination to have a good season and produce results.

Throughout the season, the team has produced several impressive performances, including a hard worked for win against Rangiora 2-1 which moved us to fourth on the table. The players have continued to develop their skills and confidence, particularly with such a young team and struggle with injury each week.

Special recognition goes to Holly our year nine keeper for her outstanding skills and willingness to put her body on the line each game. Her attitude and commitment have kept us in the game more often than not and helped set the standard during matchday.

A key strength of this group has been its positive team culture. The players have supported one another through positive and negative results, with continued improvement throughout the term.

Like every season, we've faced our share of challenges, including injuries, but the girls have adapted well and continued to approach matchday with a positive attitude and giving support from the sidelines when unavailable.

Looking ahead, the team is aiming to finish the season strongly and make a playoff position, working towards opportunities in the coming years. We would love to see plenty of school support at our upcoming fixtures, including the upcoming tournament which is hosted in Christchurch this year.

A huge thank you goes to our coach Craig Whinham, manager Miss Penty, whānau, and supporters whose time, encouragement, and dedication make the season possible. Their ongoing support is greatly appreciated by everyone involved with the team.

Visiting Japanese students from Okazaki Nishi

Last week we farewelled a wonderful group of Japanese students visiting from Okazaki Nishi. We have had a relationship with this school for 15 years now, and always enjoy the time they spend with us.

International students visiting our school is an important opportunity for our visitors to experience a different country, school, education system and culture. This also offers our Lincoln students a great opportunity to share and learn about another culture. Often the memories made during this short stay can be lifelong.

We had an enthusiastic cohort of Lincoln HS student ambassador’s that looked after these visitors, and we had a lot of interactions and shared learning together in classes. A visit to the local Lincoln Primary School, craft classes and a basketball session were highlights for our visitors...not to mention the delicious cheese rolls and scones that they made. We are very lucky at Lincoln HS to have such great teachers willing to host interactions and share special activities with our visitors.

Again we had a wonderful group of homestay families that welcomed these students into their homes and nurtured them during their brief stay. We could not do this without our kind host families. Whilst some were sadly struck down with winter illness during their stay, there were many emotional farewells on Tuesday morning, which was a testament to the relationships developed during such a brief stay.

We look forward to welcoming Okazaki Nishi again in 2027!

Year 10 French Immersion Trip to Hagley Pétanque Club

On Friday 7th August, the class of Year 10 French went to the Pétanque Club in Hagley Park for our annual French day with St. Andrew’s College.

The day began with a French breakfast of a pain au chocolat and a game of “Find someone who in French” as a way of breaking the ice and helping the Lincoln group of 22 and the smaller STAC group of 13 get to know each other.

Afterwards, we got into mixed groups and did four rotations: model building, a quiz about French culture, a treasure hunt in the gardens and most importantly of all the students learned how to play Pétanque with volunteers from the club.

At midday we broke for lunch which was a baguette sandwich of cheese, ham and rocket with a mustard dressing, and a delicious blackcurrant friand for dessert.

Before leaving, prizes were given out for the best model building, the winners of the Pétanque, the treasure hunt and the quiz.

The students really enjoyed the opportunity to be immersed in French activities, eat French food and learn how to play Pétanque.

My thanks go to the volunteers of the Hagley Pétanque club, the teachers and the French assistante at STAC for helping to make this an awesome and immersive French experience for our students.

Performing Arts Updates

Ara Music Student Visit

Last week, students from the Ara Music Arts Programme visited Lincoln High School to perform and speak with our music students. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to gain first-hand insight into what studying music beyond high school can look like.

Students from both the Contemporary and Jazz programmes presented a short concert before taking part in a Q&A session.

For many students, hearing directly from musicians only a few years older than themselves made the next step feel far more achievable. The visit provided valuable inspiration and plenty of food for thought for those considering further study in music.

NCEA Performance Evening

Last Wednesday evening, our NCEA Music students took to the stage for their second and final Performance Evening of the year.

Performing to a small but enthusiastic audience of family and friends, students delivered a memorable evening that reflected the depth and diversity of music within our programme. From Bach to Olivia Dean, the audience was treated to a wide range of styles, instruments, and musical personalities.

These evenings are much more than assessment opportunities. They provide students with the chance to share the results of months of practice and preparation in a supportive performance environment.

The evening was a wonderful celebration of student achievement and a reminder of the important role live performance plays in developing confident, capable young musicians.

YEAR 13 SCHOOL COUNCIL

Wellness Week 2026! Looking After Our Minds, Bodies and Mates

Week 6 was all about Wellness Week, with a range of lunchtime activities designed to give students a chance to have fun, connect with others and take a break from the busy school week. As students head into winter tournament week, CAA exams, and Derived grade exams, the Year 13 School Council felt it was an important time to take care of each other!

Students got involved in lunchtime games on Monday, challenged their friends with board games and colouring-in on Tuesday, and enjoyed a movie on Thursday. Friday wrapped up the week with hot chocolate and cookies, which a great opportunity to give back to others and take care of our school community in a small, but meaningful way.

One of the highlights was Shave for a Cure on Wednesday. Around 10 students took the brave step of shaving or chopping their hair to support a great cause. The event ran smoothly and created a fantastic atmosphere of support and encouragement. A special mention goes to Nova McDougall, Year 9, who raised an incredible $1,100+!!

Thank you to everyone who got involved, supported the activities and helped make Wellness Week such a positive week at LHS. It was a great reminder that looking after our wellbeing can be as simple as getting involved, having fun, connecting with others and showing kindness.
