Course selection for 2027 is well underway, with assemblies held this week and the Course Selection Afternoon and Careers Expo coming up on 25 August. I encourage families to explore the information on our website and to have those conversations at home about subjects and pathways for next year. The Year 9 to 11 interviews will follow on 10 September. Beyond these events, it has been a real pleasure to see our students involved in so much across the school and wider community, from House Spirit Week and our performing and visual arts, to strong performances across winter sport and representation at national level. The breadth of what our students take part in continues to be something we can all take real pride in. I wish everyone a productive few weeks ahead as the term continues.  |

2027 Course Selection - Important Information and Dates |
This term there are several events to support our Yr 9-12 students (as well as the enrolling Year 8 students) to make their course selections for 2027. Updated information regarding the structure of the Year level curriculums and available subject choices can be found on the school website. At this stage, it is useful for parents and students to start looking at this information and have some discussions about potential subject selections and pathways for 2027 and beyond. Students can also start to have conversations with their subject and Linc teachers. There is also useful information on the website: www.tahatu.govt.nz The key dates for the Course Selection process are: Week 4 - Course selection assemblies were held this week. Students will receive printed information about the course selection process This will also be emailed to students/families. Week 6 - Portal Opens and Course Selection Afternoon Monday 24th August: Course Selection Portal opens Tuesday 25th August: Course Selection Afternoon & Careers/Tertiary Provider Expo 4.00-6.00pm. Students and parents are encouraged to come along to ask questions and learn about different courses across the learning areas. The tertiary provider expo will be held in Wai Tūhura (New Science block) and the Learning Areas will be set up around the school. There will also be a short presentation on NCEA (similar to that which was held in Term 1), with a focus on understanding NCEA in relation to course selection, therefore suitable for students going into senior school. This will be at 5.15pm in Wai Tūhura. Week 7 - Portal Closes Friday 4th September – Course Selection Portal closes at 12.00pm. |

Whānau/Kaiako Interviews |
Whānau of Year 12 and 13 students were invited to attend our senior parent teacher interviews on the 13th August. These interviews provided an important opportunity to discuss student’s progress, preparation for the derived grade examinations, and what they need to focus on before the external NZQA assessments later this year. We hope that those who attended these interviews found them useful and informative. Interviews for our Year 9-11 students will be held on the 10th September and bookings will open approx two weeks before hand. We will send out information when these are available to book. |

Performing Arts: 2027 Production Auditions |
Auditions for Bring It On attracted a fantastic turnout on Saturday 8 August, with performers showcasing their talents through rap, anthem and movement auditions, with some students even demonstrating aerials and cossacks, to name just a few. For the first time in several years, every student who auditioned has been offered a place in the production, a reflection of both the talent on display and the commitment shown by everyone involved. It was wonderful to see so many students challenge themselves and embrace the opportunity to be part of the show. Callbacks on Sunday 9 August put performers through their paces as they sang songs from the musical, explored their vocal ranges and tackled a series of short scenes. With such a diverse range of skills to consider, finalizing the cast has been no easy task. Rehearsals begin on 6 September, launching what promises to be a memorable production season. Alongside preparing for the show, the company hopes to be involved in Christmas Parade publicity once again and will be running quiz nights and other fundraising events in the lead up to production. There is plenty to look forward to as Bring It On gets underway.

Y11 Visual Arts Exhibition at Down by the Liffey Gallery 27th August to 6th September 1 James Street, Lincoln Hours: Thursday 11.30 to 2.30 Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm Work makes Work: a selection of Lincoln High School Year 11 Sculpture and Digital prints and Photography. Borrowed from Bruce Nauman’s studio philosophy, the phrase "Work makes work." asserts that artmaking is an unfolding process where one action sparks the next. This exhibition highlights a dynamic range of sculpture, digital printmaking, and photography from our first semester Year 11 classes. Come and check it out between Thursday 27th August and Sunday 30th August. |
“Don’t mid the Truth! The Art of Selwyn youth” On Thursday 30th July the exhibition opened to the public at with a formal opening at Te Whare Tapere in Te Ara Ātea Rolleston. This was a big social event with large numbers of ākonga, kaiako and whānau from all three kura. The buzz in the crowd was one of excitement and admiration. This was the inaugural exhibition (which we hope to be an annual fixture) for the regions Visual Arts ākonga. Lincoln High school Y13 Art students joined with senior Visual Arts ākonga from both Darfield High School and Rolleston Collage to present a selection of the fantastic work that the rangatahi across our region make in their learning journey in the creative arts. Lincoln High School has long been a kura for innovation and keeping the educational interests of students at the centre of the courses it offers. Future focused learning has been critical – looking at the direction the world is heading in terms of careers. When the high school opened in 1959 the curriculum was largely driven by the restrictions set by the then Department of Education. The staples were mandatory – English, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education. There was an early commitment to Homecraft and Trades courses, in particular Woodwork with Metalwork limited at this stage by available space. Importantly, Art and Music were also available for the more creative minded. Given Lincoln’s rural location, an Agricultural Course was a “must-do”. The course focused on local farm visits and took advantage of fortnightly trips to Canterbury Agricultural College. Into the 1960s, Commerce, French, History, Georgraphy and Technical Drawing subjects were in place, and as the school expanded there was more scope for option choices. Typing was also a subject, (until the early 1990s), with classrooms lined with rows of typewriters that students noisily clacked, while paying attention to a warning bell and battling with ink, ribbons and loud carriage returns. Japanese appeared during the 1970s as well as Art History and Social Studies. In 1987, a new $8500 horticulture garden was established (see below) and as the world moved into the 1990s, Graphic Design, Outdoor Education and Applied Computing began to feature more prominently. Today, there is an enormous choice for students and as we look forward to the introduction of the new curriculum, we hope this can continue, and keep allowing for student agency in their education. |

HOCKEY 1ST XI Boys 2026 report Captain; Josh Briggs, James Norton Boys Hockey started off the year with 3 pre-season grading games, two of which they drew and one they won. This placed the boys in division 2 for secondary schools’ hockey. The boys have played 3 games since the season started, winning all three, notably beating Christs College 3rds 7-0, making them undefeated for the year. This strong start filled the boys with confidence as their season continues, with a big match on the 3rd of July against Papanui 1st XI, who they are tied with for top of the table. There has been some notable performances from individuals as well this season, including Thomas Lennon scoring 4 goals in 1 quarter against CBHS Colts and Dax Waddell scoring a Hattrick against Christs College 3rds. Performances like these have fueled the boys winning streak, but so have the fill ins. Being a small squad this year, the boys have had to have multiple fill ins at different occasions, and we can’t express our gratitude enough to these fill ins because without them, the boys would be playing a man down most weeks. Additionally, a huge shout out to our goalkeeper, Seth McLenaghan, who has made countless saves, despite never having played hockey prior to this season. One of our biggest highlights this season however was the debut of head student Dan Hurst when he filled in for the boys, Dan brought the energy and the vibes and drew in a crowd of people excited to see him play, and he didn't disappoint, putting in a shift and playing excellently on the turf. The boys have also made a habit out of McDonalds runs after every game, a fun tradition that has brought the team together and has become a post-match highlight. We also want to give a shout to our coach, Sam Macdonald and manager, Nick Marston, without them running this team and having this success would not be possible, thank you so much. Finally, a huge thank you to our parents and supporters, who make the trip out every week no matter where we play or what conditions.

FOOTBALL 1ST XI BOYS 2026 report Captain; Josiah Early Vice Captain; Ollie Mackle The start of the school football season was a tough one to say the least, losing our first 2 games. In our third game against Burnside High, we went 3-0 down with 8 minutes to play. The team showed great resilience to keep fighting, and we managed to complete a 3-goal comeback to draw the game 3-3. This result created confidence which flowed onto the next game, 4-4 against STAC in a cross-over friendly. We built on this and in the following game we came away with a 3-0 win over Hillmorton. Unfortunately, we lost our last 2 games of the round robin which we found ourselves in the Championship competition (bottom 6) for the remainder of the season. We kicked off the championship with a 2-0 score over Middleton Grange. A couple of players have stepped up and performed well during the start of the 2026 campaign. Mack Hoult (yr 12) has stepped up in his second year of playing for the First XI, having scored 4 goals and creating 2 assists. An impressive 6 xGA for Mack over 8 games. Ben Fox has also had an impressive debut season with the First XI, bagging himself 2 goals in his first 4 games for the school. Joshiah Early has also stood out by scoring 5 goals and getting 3 assists over the first 8 games, getting an impressive 8 xGA over 8 games. We have also had 4 players achieve the milestone of 50 appearances for Lincoln High First XI. Adrian Ross (61), Ollie Mackle (59), Freddie Cameron (55), and Joshiah Early (57). This is an incredible achievement and shows the commitment to the school and team that these boys have put in over the last 3 years. The main point which has helped our team become successful in games is the resilience to keep fighting and dig in until the final whistle. We learnt through the Burnside High game that goals can come at any stage in the game, you have to stay switched on and fight until the end and anything is possible. There have been a couple challenges we have had to overcome throughout the season. We were unlucky to have our goalkeeper (Alex Matusovsky) get sick just before our game against St Thomas'. This game was the toughest game of the round robin by far. Annakin Lloyd stepped up to the challenge and put in a good shift in net against a very attacking and strong team. The team has set strong goals that we want to achieve for the rest of the season. The boys have gelled together as a team well and have bounced back from losses as a team. Our main goal for the rest of the season is to emerge victoriously and win the Championship. It’s time to bring back some football silverware to Lincoln High school. A massive thank you to our coach, Craig Crawford, for giving up so much of your time each week to travel across town and be there for every game. Your commitment, encouragement, and dedication to the team has been appreciated throughout the season. A big thank you also to Miss Vernall and Mrs Knowles for braving the cold to support the boys, keeping spirits high on the bench, and providing constant encouragement. Finally, to all our parents, whānau, and supporters, thank you for standing on the sidelines in the cold, cheering the boys on week after week. Your support means so much to the team and has played a huge part in making this season such an enjoyable one. We could not do it without you! Update - Our 1st X1 has made the finals and are playing against Christ College at Foster Park Turf at 4:40pm on Wednesday 19th August. They would love as much support as they can get! |
Dance NZ Made Competition |
A huge congratulations to the members of our LHS Dance Team who represented Lincoln High School at DanceNZMade 2026! Cartier Dann, Hayley Hopkins, Aila Wilson, Tania Baldwin, Julia Peden, Brooklyn McGregor, Ruby Wilson, Scarlett Lye. DanceNZMade began on Sunday 2 August, with seven members of the team taking to the stage in the solo and duo competitions. There were some awesome results across the day, with Scarlett Lye earning 6th place in the Year 10 solo category. Cartier Dann and Hayley Hopkins finished 5th in the Year 11–13 duo category, while Brooklyn McGregor and Ruby Wilson finished 3rd in the Year 9–10 duo category. Out of the many entries in these categories, we are so proud of these results! Both duos performed pieces they had choreographed themselves, making their achievements even more special. The next day, Monday 3 August, the full team came together for a massive day of dance. They took part in workshops before spending time rehearsing and preparing to compete on the stage together in the evening. The team then competed in the Open Groups category, performing alongside a number of strong dances from other schools and finished 6th overall! It was a great result and a reflection of the work, energy and commitment the dancers brought to the stage. Across both days, our dancers showed plenty of passion and proudly displayed our school tikanga. There was support for one another both on and off the stage. DanceNZMade was an awesome opportunity for the team to perform, challenge themselves and celebrate dance alongside students from across the region. |

Student Leadership and House Update |
House Spirit Week: Week 3 was the start to spirit week, where we had a full fun week planned. Monday lunchtime we kicked off with junior dodgeball and had a pretty solid turnout, with the bird houses taking it out for the win. Tuesday we had senior dodgeball, and although the bird team lacked players the game was still a good watch but in the end the fish houses took it out. Wednesday during Linc, we held a baby photo Linc comp where Linc classes had to guess baby photos of teachers around Lincoln High. Kāhu 21 took this like a champ and won the competition. On Thursday, there was a debate; with a well-respected turnout, we had 2 groups talk and debate it out, being asked prompts such as “Is social media ruining our attention span?” and “Is water wet?” These teams were a mix of the school houses, but everyone in the winning team did receive an extra point for their house. Friday was full of colour with lots of students wearing an accessory of their house colour to show house spirit. Throughout the week we also held a short film contest; congratulations, Chloe and Ethan Pareanga from Kōtare, for taking out a well-deserved win. And on to the most important part of this whole event. What house took it out overrule? The winner is, drumroll please… KĀHU! A huge thank you to everyone who got involved in spirit week, and a huge thank you to the staff that made it possible. |

YEAR 13 SCHOOL COUNCIL Taha Tinana have been working hard on the creation and launch of recognition badges to recognise and acknowledge people who have done some amazing achievements among their Sport, Club or Preforming art. Taha Tinana have also helped to ensure the breakfast club is run smoothly, allowing students to come along and grab some breakfast before school to keep them fuelled for a big day of learning. In term 3, we are working alongside Taha Hinengaro to ensure in week 6 Wellness Week runs smoothing for all the students to participate and enjoy. -George Henry, Taha Tinana Taha Hinengaro has been responsible for hosting Breakfast Club but are alternating weeks with Taha Tinana. Study Lounge is also alive and well, with students coming along every week to socialize, have some snacks, and get some extra work done. Leading up to Derived Grade Exams starting in week 9, we have specialist classroom teachers joining in to provide extra help. In Week 6, we are collaborating with Taha Tinana to host Wellness Week to support students who are preparing for their Derived Grade Exams. Activities include yoga, sports on the field, therapy dogs, a fundraising head shave, and a sausage sizzle! This has been done by posting daily messages, quotes and phrases in the respective language to each Year Levels' Teams channels. We encourage our ākonga/students to expand their bilingual skills and embrace cultural ideas. We have also started the 2026 Taha Wairua Book of Wisdom which will guide next year's Taha Wairua team by sharing our accomplishments, challenges, events and general feedback from this year. Senior Formal On Friday 1 August, Lincoln High School’s annual formal was held at the Wigram Air Force Museum, with this year’s theme being midnight masquerade in Paris. The evening was filled with masks, photo booths, plenty of food and, of course, lots of dancing! A special thank you on behalf of the School Council to Miss Blanchard, whose support and hard work behind the scenes helped make the evening possible. We would also like to thank everyone who helped contribute to making the night such a success. Congratulations to our formal award winners: Y12 Prince, Piseth Pauline; Y12 Princess, Emily Bowley; Y13 King, Peter Nottage; and Y13 Queen, Holly Grant. Congratulations also to Toby De Silva for Best Mask, Taetae Itterote for Best Dancer, and Georgia Browning for Best Dressed. One of the highlights of the evening was, as always, the traditional Council Dance. The 2026 Student Council brought out the classics, dancing along to bangers including Beat It by Michael Jackson and Barbie Girl by Aqua. Overall, it was a fantastic night, and we hope everyone who attended had an amazing time and enjoyed making this year’s formal one to remember! |
