Kia ora koutou, it has been pleasing to see how positively our students have settled into the routines and expectations of the year. Across our classrooms, we are seeing good habits taking shape, students arriving on time, prepared, engaging with their learning, and building the consistency that is so important for academic success. These early patterns matter, and they set a strong foundation for progress and achievement as the year unfolds.
Yesterday our Athletics Sports Day was a fantastic celebration of participation, house spirit, and community, showcasing great enthusiasm, some excellent individual performances and some incredible costumes. In addition to academic success, one of our key aims this year has been engagement in the wider life of the school, and we certainly saw this on show yesterday.
In this newsletter, we also celebrate an impressive range of sporting achievements, from individual records to team successes, a result of hard work and dedication from these students.
Beyond sport, it is encouraging to see students engaging in the wider life of the school through clubs and groups. These experiences, combined with strong learning habits and positive connections, help our young people grow in confidence and capability, and I thank staff and whānau for the ongoing support that makes this possible.

Athletic Sports
What an incredible day we had at our annual Athletic Sports yesterday! Even though we had to postpone, the energy, colour, and house spirit on display made it a fantastic whole-school event. It was awesome to see so many students getting involved, whether competing, supporting from the sidelines, or proudly representing their houses in full colour.
A huge thank you to our students for the enthusiasm, effort, and encouragement shown throughout the day. Your willingness to step up, give things a go, and cheer one another on is what makes events like this so special. We are incredibly proud of the way you represented your houses.
Thank you also to our staff, House Captains, and organisers who worked behind the scenes (and out in the sun!) to ensure the day ran smoothly. These events simply don’t happen without your time, energy, and commitment.
House pride was on full display, with excitement echoing across the field and some outstanding costumes adding to the fun. The friendly competition was fierce, and the participation across events was fantastic to see.
Our Houses had some fun throughout the day with the annual House Corral decoration, House Parade, and Fashion on the Field.
Kōtare took out the top place for both the House Corral and the House Parade, but it was Kūaka who showcased the MOST house costumes and colour in Fashion on the Field. Year 13 pink troll dolls from Īnaka won the best group costume and Poppy Penfold from Mako won the best individual costume!
The Staff vs Year 13 relay race was an exciting event again this year with the STUDENTS taking out the win!
Congratulations to all involved! We look forward to confirming final results and celebrating individual achievements next week!
The next house event is House Kī-o-rahi in Week 8. Keep an eye on the House Teams pages for more information!
A huge acknowledgement to John Worsfold who has been the starter for our track events for the last 43 years!

Doug Aitken and Karen Urbahn competed in the Kathmandu Coast to Coast on the 13th and 14th February.
Doug was part of a 2 person team in the 2 day event. Doug ran up the Otira Viaduct as part of the Route B course, as it was too wet to go over Goat Pass. They came in 1st place in the Veteran male 2 day team category.
Karen Urbahn competed in the Individual 2 day event with the Kayaking leg being her preferred discipline.
Congratulations Doug and Karen! This is a great achievement.
2027 Coast to Coast School Team
Several students are planning to enter the 2027 Coast to Coast event. Hopefully we will have students competing in the schools 2 day individual category, and the schools teams category. Entries closed on Monday March 2nd, and the results of who has a place will be announced several weeks later. This is a large commitment by students - as it will involve lots of training, and the students who will kayak down the Waimakariri Gorge will need to get a qualification in order to compete.

Houses at Lincoln High School
Did you know that our House system dates back to our kura becoming an official High School in 1959?
The original Houses were Fitzgerald, Godley, Wakefield and Tod, the latter named after a prominent landowner in Lincoln. Each House had one male and female leader, and they coordinated running of several House events. Athletics Sports was an early House event as it remains today, with Tod winning the senior and junior relays. Fitzgerald House won the Cross Country, Tod the Swimming Sports, and Fitzgerald the Tennis Tournament. Overall, Fitzgerald House won the inaugural Crawford House Shield, with Tod winning in 1960 and 1961. House Officers expanded through the 1960s to include secretaries for each House. Notice in the photos below the sharp school uniform worn by House Officers in 1968 compared to non-uniform for 7th Form (Year 13) by 1973.
Houses seemed to drop out of favour during the1980s until returning in full force in 2006 with the Houses renamed after birds and fish of importance around Te Waihora. Mako has been the most successful House since, winning the shield six times.
Students in the Spotlight - Introducing the LHS Tech Crew
The LHS Tech Crew is underway with 15 new members joining existing members from a range of levels this year. We meet every Monday at lunch in the hall, with the first Monday of each month for everyone and follow up Mondays for training in specific areas. These include set up for events (Athletics Day, assemblies) as well as how to operate lighting and sound in the booth, from headsets and microphones to editing music for upcoming shows. The new intake brings their own expertise in a range of areas, so it will be an exciting year, learning on the job and from the range of experts already in the crew. The team is run by Logan Edwards, our most senior tech crew member, who brings in a range of expertise from his work and production experiences in this area. If you have any questions or would still like to join this team, contact Sandra McLean on Teams.

MITO Automotive Bus Tour – Tuesday 24 February 2026
Lincoln High School was delighted to secure places on this year’s highly sought‑after MITO Automotive Bus Tour. Attending on behalf of the school were students Maddy Anderson- Torrance, Emanuel Gibson, Riley Maxwell, along with Mrs. Murphy, Work Experience & Gateway Coordinator.
The group spent the day visiting three automotive workplaces across Christchurch—Team Hutchinson Ford (light vehicles), Penske (heavy diesel), and AMI MotorHub (collision repair). Each stop offered students a behind‑the‑scenes look at the wide range of career pathways available in the automotive industry.
A standout moment for the group was touring the impressive Penske facility, with its state- of-the-art workshop featuring heated floors and an advanced oil reticulation system.
