Cantamath Champions 2024

In week 5 Lincoln took part in Cantamath 2024. Cantamath is a competition where students show their Mathematical understanding through creative means in the display section (posters, photography, static models, dynamic models, wearable math, and written work), or through the Team Problem Solving competition. The Cantamath competition has been running since 1972 and is an iconic event in the Canterbury region.

This year all Year 9 students created their own Cantamath display and these were judged at school, with 35 of the best of the best going through to be part of the competition, where they were judged by a team of experts and then displayed for public viewing at the Wolfbrook Arena. Once again Lincoln High School was highly successful in the displays section, taking out 5 Excellence and 14 Highly Commended awards! We are so proud of the efforts of our students.

But special recognition must also go out to one particular student, Clara Graham (9AO) who created an incredible dress inspired by the Fibonacci Sequence, in the Wearable Maths section of the competition. Clara’s dress won the Cantamath Outstanding Award, for the best displays out of all of those entered from throughout Canterbury. Only a maximum of 3 of these awards can be given each year, and Clara’s creation certainly deserved to be at the top! Well done Clara!

In the competition section we also entered two teams of 4 students in both the Year 9 and Year 10 Teams competition. All four teams performed very well, in a competition that is always highly fought out, as winning Cantamath is considered a significant academic achievement for all schools. Three of the teams finished in the upper half of just under 90 teams competing. They performed admirably and we are very proud of them. However, one team excelled in what was looking like a very tight battle, and we are pleased to announce that for the first time in the history of Cantamath, Lincoln High School are the Year 9 Cantamath Teams Competition Champions with the trophy being taken out by Ravi Bhatia, Sansithu Deepagoda, Amael Fenix and Jonathan Searle. We are very proud of these boys and they thoroughly deserve our accolades. Well done!
