Makos Zonal South Island Secondary Schools Open Water Swimming event was hosted by Swimming New Zealand and the Banana Boat New Zealand Ocean Swim Series. 

This partnership has continued from 2021. The 2022 Event was held in conjunction with the Generation Homes La Grande Swim on Saturday 26 February 2022 in Akaroa, Christchurch.

Swimmers were eligible for both Secondary School and Banana Boat New Zealand Ocean Swim Series prizes and medals. Year 9 - 13 high school students battled it out across three different distances - 750m, 2000m and 5000m.

Rory Gordon, Year 11 swam from Wainui to Akaroa (5000m event) in a time of 01 hour:18 mins:27 seconds.  This meant Rory came in as 8^th female overall, 4^th female in her 15-19 year age group and 2^nd in the South Island Secondary Schools 15-19years. 

Excellent results and gutsy effort Rory, that is a long swim!

Next on Rory’s Open Water Swimming Agenda is the National Event held early April at Mount Maunganui, we wish her all the best for this and look forward to seeing her results.
